The duties of the Sacristan are varied and diverse. They prepare the church for the celebration of Mass, as well as set up for other liturgical celebrations. The set up for Mass includes choosing the correct chalice for the celebrant, the correct number of ciboria for the Hosts, the correct chalice for the Precious Blood, the appropriate cloths, and additional items for a funeral or benediction. At the conclusion of the celebration, the Sacristan takes care of the vessels used during the Mass. Training and written instructions are provided.
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMHC) assist the priest in offering to the faithful the greatest gift that God can give us, namely, His Son in the Eucharist. Those interested must be registered parishioners, have received the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation, be at least of high school age, and approved by the pastor. New EMHC must attend a training session. There are 3 ministers assigned for each of the 4pm, 9:30am, & 11am Masses. EMHC may also assist with distributing Holy Communion to the sick or homebound.
This ministry offers members of the parish the opportunity to minister to the parish by proclaiming the Word of God. A reader spreads the Good News and gives witness to the central role of God's Word in the life of the Church. Readers assist with the weekday, Saturday evening and Sunday Masses. Training is provided.
Ushers are ministers of hospitality for our Liturgy. They are the first people to greet and welcome those who come to participate in the Celebration of the Eucharist. In addition to this important duty, they are also responsible for taking up the collection, and distributing the parish bulletins and other materials after Mass. Ushers are punctual and are considered ambassadors of the parish. Training and written instructions are provided, and volunteers are always welcome. This ministry is also an excellent opportunity to volunteer as a family, as all ages can perform the duties of an usher.
Altar servers have the privilege of assisting the priest in the sanctuary during the Mass and other liturgical functions. Servers carry the cross, the candles, hold the book for the priest, carry the incense, assist in setting the altar during the preparation of the gifts. They also wash the hands of the priest, ring the altar bell at the consecration, and assist the priest and deacon as necessary. Must have received First Communion and be in 4th grade.
Provides musical support for the Masses and other liturgies. Singers & instrumentalists are always welcome to be a part of this ministry.
This ministry is involved in counting the funds collected on Sundays and Holy Days. A background check is required and training is provided.
The purpose of the Altar Linens ministry is to serve the community of St. Leo by collecting, washing, ironing, and returning the linens used during Mass. The linens are laundered in a manner respectful of the body and blood of Christ that lingers upon these linens. Team members participate in a rotation and training is provided on how to care for these special linens.
This team of volunteers keep the Altar Servers looking sharp. Once a month, volunteers will take a third of altar server vestments to their home to remove wax, launder, and iron/steam the garments.
The Homebound ministry visits parishioners who are unable to leave their homes due to age or sickness. Any parishioner is welcome to visit and pray with parishioners who cannot leave their home at a mutually agreeable time. In addition, trained Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion bring Holy Communion once a week to those who are unable to attend Mass. A background check is required.
